This Toolkit acts as a standard source of information relevant to the ready-made-garment (RMG) sector of Bangladesh on the issues of RMG factory worker health, wellness, and productivity. The resources presented are intended to serve BGMEA member factories with essential information targeted towards both factory management and workers. We strive to provide accessible resources that foster holistic health and wellness and, in turn, effect greater productivity within the RMG sector. Ultimately, this Toolkit provides and centralizes the resources needed to empower factory workers to prioritize personal health.
Together, let’s create a culture of health and wellness of those not only considered to be the ‘lifeline’ of Bangladesh’s RMG sector, but also of our country’s economic prosperity.
The Factory Worker section of the Toolkit intends to increase the health-related resources available to RMG factory workers by providing simple written and graphic information with clear, actionable steps for improving health. The knowledge in this section is organized by priority health concern and other relevant areas that contribute to the personal wellbeing of factory workers as well the sustainable productivity of individual factories and the national RMG industry.
The Factory Management section of the Toolkit has been designed to provide factory owners and management with evidence-based best practices for spreading health awareness in the factory setting. Additionally, this section offers simple, low-cost, and sustainable interventions to improve the overall wellbeing of factory workers. Research has repeatedly shown that creating a supportive, healthy working environment leads to a variety of positive returns at the factory level.
Factory workers are the drivers of production. Thus, it should be obvious that workforce health and wellness is integral to sustaining factory productivity. Case studies have shown how investing in the health and safety of workers not only improves individual wellbeing, but also has a profound impact on factory success (WHO, 2010). A workforce with access to quality health resources is an asset that contributes to a more stable and efficient production environment. Prioritizing health initiatives within the RMG sector is a key investment into both workforce resilience and industry success.
