Symptoms and Protection of Covid-19 Disease

What is the covid-19 (coronavirus) virus?​
Corona virus is not the name of a single virus. Corona viruses are a group of viruses that attack the respiratory system. This virus can cause illness in both animals and humans. Corona virus is highly contagious and spreads quickly from person to person. The corona virus can range from the common cold to life-threatening conditions. People living in unhygienic environment including patients with kidney, asthma, heart disease are more at risk of getting infected with Covid. Although now the prevalence and severity of covid is much less, but still its presence is present in Bangladesh as well as all over the world.

The symptoms of this virus are usually mild and most people do not need any special treatment. Some patients may even be asymptomatic, that is, they do not show any symptoms. However, the symptoms found in people with COVID-19 range from mild symptoms to severe illness. Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus.
  • Fever or chills
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Sore throat
  • Tiredness
  • A cold
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Muscle pain
  • Headache
  • Loss of taste or smell of food
  • Diarrhea etc
However, most affected individuals (about 80%) recover from the disease without requiring any special treatment. About 1 in 6 people with Covid-19 become very ill and develop breathing difficulties. Older people, and those with health problems such as high blood pressure, heart problems or diabetes, are more likely to get seriously ill with the disease.
  • Maintain a distance of at least 1 meter (about 2 hands) from others to reduce the chance of exposure if they sneeze or talk.
  • As a precaution against Corona, always wear a mask properly when you are around people.
  • Cover your nose and mouth while sneezing.
  • Practice washing your hands regularly with soap and water.
  • Use hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid going out unless absolutely necessary.
  • If necessary, shower after returning home if outside for long periods of time.
  • Check oxygen levels regularly (oxygen levels in healthy people are between 95-98 percent). 
  • Check body temperature (normal body temperature is between 97-99 degrees)
  • Check for symptoms such as cough, shortness of breath or weakness
  • Wear mask properly and maintain social distance
  • Take and follow the doctor’s advice if necessary
  • Avoid close contact with a person infected with Covid.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water and wear a mask when around people with COVID-19.
  • Keep your house clean and well ventilated.
If the symptoms do not improve and the body condition continues to worsen, a doctor should be consulted immediately. They are-
  • Persistent high fever,
  • Shortness of breath,
  • Skin rash,
  • Difficulty moving or speaking,
  • Chest pain etc.
* If these symptoms appear, it is important to take the patient to the doctor as soon as possible without delay, and if necessary, admit the patient to the hospital.
